4 Strategies for Downsizing Your Stuff

Have you ever opened a packed closet or overflowing cabinet and asked yourself, where did all this stuff come from?! Going through everything you own can take a long time, which is why so many people only start getting rid of things when it’s time to move. If a move is on your horizon, the opportunity to downsize and simplify your life has arrived.

1. Break It Up

Cleaning out an entire house is overwhelming and daunting, which might make you want to give up as soon as you begin. Simplify things by creating a schedule, whether it’s a written one or only in your head. Either way, you might decide to tackle the coat closet on Monday, the entertainment console on Tuesday, the tall dresser on Wednesday, and so on.

2. Try the KonMari Method

Made famous by Japanese organizer Marie Kondo, the KonMari Method is a simple way to approach downsizing. To do it, pick one shelf or drawer full of stuff. Empty it out so you can see all the contents. Pick up each item, one by one, and ask yourself if it “sparks joy” in you – basically, if you love it enough to keep it. Put it to one side if the answer is yes, and put it to another side if the answer is no. Divide the rejected pile into “trash” and “donate” piles.

3. Make Downsizing a Party

Does the idea of sorting and organizing fill you with dread? If you can make it seem more appealing, you’ll be more inclined to do it. Download a funny audiobook to listen to while you work or invite a friend over to eat pizza and help you get organized. Promise yourself a reward for hitting your organizational goal each day, like a favorite dessert or a long bath.

4. Set a (Fun) Financial Goal

Chances are, the stuff that’s taking up space in your closet is worth money to someone. Sell the stuff you no longer need on sites like eBay, Craigslist, ThredUP, Decluttr and Letgo. Use the money to get a massage, buy concert tickets, or take a weekend trip. This is especially effective for getting kids involved. Promise them a percentage of whatever money you earn, but only if they help.
