How to Pack Like A Pro

Looking forward to moving to a new home but dreading the thought of packing all your belongings to bring with you? We hear ya! Packing can be a tedious job – especially when you don’t have much experience doing it. Luckily, this is exactly what we do! Day in. Day out. As much as we don’t like to brag, we think of ourselves as experts in this field and have picked up a few packing hacks along the way, too. So, rather than wasting time on trial and error, listen to your trustworthy Dallas movers and let us show you exactly how to pack like a pro.

Make A Packing Plan

Do you want in on a secret? There’s one key tool that great packers use which shoddy packers don’t. And we know that it’s something you have, too! Yup, we’re talking about that universal currency: time. Now, we’re not saying you need to free up all day, every day to pack – quite the opposite! As soon as you know that you’re moving, work out exactly what you need to do and plan how you’re going to make the most of the time you already have.

The best piece of advice we can give you? The earlier you start, the better!

If you only have weekends free, plan in advance what you’re going to do each weekend leading up to the move. (While still allowing yourself enough time to enjoy life, too)! If things are looking a bit tight, we’re sure you have some friendly neighbors who’ll be happy to help.

Want someone else to do everything for you? Get in touch today to discuss our Dallas packing services. We can help you with as much or as little as you like; whether you just want one day of help, one room off your plate, or your whole home packed up, perfectly.

Get the Materials You Need

While you technically could pack up your home using a bunch of old suitcases you’ve salvaged from your friends and family, there is a better way to do things. Having access to packing materials like boxes, shrink wrap, dollies, straps, padding, stair rollers and even packing tape will make your move go a million times smoother. Plus, to save you even more time and energy, we can deliver all of the materials that you need straight to your door.

How Many Boxes Will You Need?

As a Dallas movers company, one of the most common questions that we get asked is:

“How many boxes do I need to move?”

In an ideal world, there would be one magic number or calculation, but the reality isn’t that simple. Instead, get in touch with us for an initial consultation – after talking to you about the size of your home and the number of belongings you have, we’ll be able to give you an accurate estimation based on our solid experience. (When you’re coordinating a large move, we can even do a free in-home estimation!) We are the packing pros after all! When getting packing supplies, we always recommend you get more than you think you need – it’s better to have it and not need it, after all, and most retailers will happily let you return any unused and unopened materials after you’re done.

Pack the Things You Use Least First

That fancy silverware, crystal vase and collection of 100-year-old encyclopedias? You’re probably not going to need them that much, so they’re a good place to start your packing!

Organize Your Boxes

Keeping your boxes labelled is the key to quick unpacking. Since your boxes aren’t always going to be facing the same way, label them on multiple sides. And, of course, if some of your boxes contain things you know you’ll need straightaway, mark them with a huge star so you can easily find them. Even better, put those items in a clear plastic box and/or an overnight bag.

Get Lazy!

Yup, you heard that right, you have our permission to be lazy! When it comes to moving things like dressers and wardrobes, we have a few hacks. Dressers full of clothes actually don’t need to be emptied and packed at all. We can shrink wrap them for you and then move them completely as they are. As for hanging clothes, rather than taking them off their hangers, just lay them flat in your car trunk and hang them straight back up again at the other end. Or just hang them in our wardrobe boxes!

Pay Attention to Moving Safety Guidelines

When you’re moving homes, the last thing you want to deal with is an injury. So, before you start anything, grab a cold drink and read our top tips for moving safety. Some of the most important things to pay attention to are keeping the weight of each box underneath 50 lbs, lifting with your legs and not your back, and keeping yourself hydrated when packing and moving in the middle of the day.

Have A Packing Room

No one wants a house covered in boxes, so assign one room to be your packing room. This is where you can store all your boxes and the materials that you need. Just be sure that you stack the heavy ones at the bottom, and the lighter ones at the top.

Protect Fragile Items

Different items require a different level of care than others, so you should familiarize yourself with the best way to pack these items. Some typically fragile items you might have at home could be fine China, electronic products, and even dinnerware. For these items, you should ensure that you have enough padding for them to withstand bumps or vibrations during transportation.

We generally advise using padding materials that are purpose-built for this problem. You can go the DIY route, using things like towels and blankets rather than bubble wrap, packing paper, and shock-absorbent materials. However, be aware that clothing and blankets are NOT specially made to protect items during transit. Our professional Dallas movers can advise you on exactly what you’ll need for the move and protecting your belongings.
