How to Prepare Your Electronics for Moving

So you’re about to move. Sure, you want your flatware and pillows to make the trip without getting damaged – but it’s your computer, gaming consoles, stereo system and other electronics that are critically important. They’re expensive, beloved and (in the case of your computer and tablets) probably hold sensitive personal information. Toss your pillows into any old box, but treat electronics with tremendous care before the big move.

Photograph Everything

Before unplugging anything electronic, snap photos of the device from all angles. Most importantly, take a photo of the way the cords and cables are hooked up. When you’re ready to hook everything up at the new place, use the photos as a guide to get everything in the right place.

Make Backups

If an electronic device stores any data, there’s a chance that it could get wiped or damaged during travel. Back up your laptop, tablets and other devices that hold documents or photos using cloud-based storage systems. For extra security, create physical backups using external hard drives.

Pack Each Device Separately

Getting cords and cables organized is probably the most frustrating part of unpacking electronics. Save yourself the hassle by placing each device’s cables, remote controls and accessories in a separate storage bag. (A plastic grocery bag works in a pinch!) Label the bag with the name of the device it belongs with. You might opt to keep these bags in your car or with your personal belongings while making the move, to guarantee that you can find them quickly when you reach the new place.

Use Specialty Packing Boxes

A lot of people don’t keep the original boxes for their TVs, consoles and other electronics. Tossing a blanket over these delicate items isn’t sufficient padding, even when your movers are careful. Use boxes that are made specifically to fit your flat-screen TV, computer and other electronics. They tend to cost a little more than plain shipping boxes, but the built-in padding used in these boxes makes the expense totally worthwhile.

Consider the Climate

If you’re making a long-distance move or placing your belongings in storage during the transition, be very cautious about exposing your electronics to heat, cold, water, dirt and dust. They can all ruin electronic devices. Sealing each shipping container closed with tape can help keep some elements out. But the only way to know that your devices are protected from heat, cold and water is to make sure they’re stored in climate-controlled facilities.
